A Digital Humanities Research Project using RAWGRAPHS and Google Trends
This research project examines the relationship between critic reviews and opening week box office performance. By analyzing 2023 film data, I investigated whether critic ratings on Rotten Tomatoes correlate with opening weekend box office revenues, using digital tools like RAWGRAPHS and Google Trends to visualize complex social phenomena.
"The authors investigate how critics affect the box office performance of films and how the effects may be moderated by stars and budgets. They find that both positive and negative reviews are correlated with weekly box office revenue over an eight-week period, suggesting that critics play a dual role: They can influence and predict box office revenue."
The analysis revealed a weak positive correlation between critic ratings and opening weekend box office performance. Films with higher Rotten Tomatoes scores generally performed better at the box office, suggesting that early critic reviews influence audience purchasing decisions.
Despite receiving a poor 47% Rotten Tomatoes score, Ant-Man significantly outperformed M3GAN (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) at the box office. This demonstrates the impact of franchise loyalty, large production budgets, and star power in offsetting negative reviews.
This research demonstrates that critic ratings do significantly impact a movie's box office performance, particularly during opening weekends. However, the impact is moderated by other factors such as franchise recognition, production budget, and star power.
The project showcases the potential of digital humanities methodologies in investigating complex social phenomena, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the dynamic relationship between media, culture, and society.
